What is a Marriage Commissioner

A marriage officiant is a person with the legal authority to perform marriages.
Alberta offers 2 kinds of marriage officiants - religious and civil. The religious and civil ceremonies are both legal marriages in Alberta.
  • religious ceremonies are performed by a religious representative or clergy person registered with Vital Statistics
  • civil marriages are performed by marriage commissioners appointed by the Alberta government to perform civil ceremonies for the community and area in which they reside

Starting the Process

  1. Please contact me via my website or phone number to establish your desire to have me officiate at your wedding ceremony.
  2. To hold the time and date no deposit is required.
  3. Several months prior to your wedding I will email you a reminder to purchase your marriage license, which is valid for three months from the date of issue. I will inform you of what you need to take along and how to prepare for your visit to the Licence centre.
  4. At the same time, I will forward you a questionnaire.  It will cover most of the logistics. There will be questions for both of you about your relationship, things you love and admire, respect and appreciate about your partner, dreams for the future and things you like to do with one another.  I need to get to know you.
  5. The month prior to your wedding, we will meet in person.  We will get to know one another and go over details and I will ask some more questions.  Please have clear ideas about what you do and do not want to see in your ceremony. With this information your ceremony can be custom designed for you.  Many couples opt to use the provided ceremony and vows, which is a good option, as well.
  6. After the ceremony, I will issue you a marriage statement.  You may then  apply for a marriage certificate 7 – 10 days after the ceremony.
