Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are you willing to meet and go over our wedding plans? Yes.
  • Are you willing to attend our wedding rehearsal? Yes. The time must be booked when you are booking the wedding day and it is on a first come first serve basis.  Cost $50.00.
  • What do we do as the couple? Provide me with Marriage License obtained from Alberta Registries offices, the document is valid for three months from the time of issue.
  • How many witness need to be present?  Two, both must be over 18 years.
  • Are blood tests required?  No.
  • Who appoints a Marriage Commissioner? The Government of Alberta
  • Should we hire a marriage consultant?  This is up to you.  If budget allows and your wedding is large it may be a good investment to ensure a smooth stress free-day.
  • If we don’t have a consultant will you help us with some aspects?  Yes, if you choose to have me run a rehearsal prior to the ceremony many basic questions will need to be answered.
  • Do we have to have a ring exchange? No.
  •  If my culture does not accept kissing in ceremony can this be left out?  Yes.
  • Can we have our wedding outdoors? Yes, you can but always have an indoors back up plan.
  • What about a wedding out of the country? This is called a destination wedding. You must check the requirement of the country in which you want to get married. Many couples do a simple legal marriage ceremony in Alberta first followed by ceremony in the destination location.
  • Do I need to change my last name after marriage? No, you don’t. In addition, any sharing or joining of the two last names is acceptable.
  • Can we write our own vows? Certain parts of the ceremony are mandated by law and must be included in the ceremony.  We can review how you would like to incorporate your own vows in the service.
  • May we do a theme wedding? Sure, if a costume is required to be worn by the commissioner the costs would be the responsibility of the spouses.
  • Can you provided witness? Yes. There is a charge of $35 per witness which goes directly to the witness.
  • If we speak limited English can we still be married?  Yes, a competent interpreter will have to be booked.  Cost associated with interpreter would be the responsibility of the couple.
  • When should we book a marriage commissioner? Please book as early as possible.
